Branch Manager Papanui, Christchurch

Tell us about your current role at Plumbing World – what is it that you do and what does your typical day look like? I am responsible for the overall running of the branch, its daily operations, people, sales and profit.  A typical day varies considerably with multiple elements needing to be dealt with so multi-tasking is important. I usually start with running a few reports to see how we are tracking and if there is any area of the business I need to focus on that day.  Once the customers roll in I can be serving on the counter, solving any issues they have or talking business with them.  After that it is usually back to my office to do a bit of account pricing, paperwork for support office, promotions planning and emails.  Sometimes there are meetings to attend with suppliers, senior staff or customers. It is also important to interact with the staff and keep the communication up with them constantly as I move around the branch. What is your favourite part of your role? The diversity and the people.  Every day is different, with different challenges but ultimately it is the people.  We have a good time at Papanui and when you have been around for a while like myself the long standing relationships that you form with the customers allows for a friendly family atmosphere that is a pleasure to work in. What advice do you have for someone who wants to do a similar role to you? Work hard and keep your mind open to everything that is going on around you.  Always remember customer service is paramount and that you have to build credibility with the customers and staff by your actions.  You have to remain flexible and be able to juggle a number of things at once as well as being prepared to take on that little extra project. Being able to type and use excel is certainly an advantage as well as being resourceful and able to problem solve. Tell us about your career in Plumbing World: I started back in October 1990 as the town branch delivery driver so apart from 1½   years drainlaying and being a customer it would make it close to 25 years. In that time I have had multiple roles – Delivery driver, Inwards goods, Warehouse person, Inventory controller, Warehouse manager, Assistant Manager to Branch Manager. I have also been on specialist inventory management teams and a business improvement team at a national level.  I have helped work and train staff in a number of South Island branches and helped assimilate two external businesses into Plumbing World which included helping to set up Ashburton Branch.  I am currently in my 9th year as Manager of Papanui. Why do you love working at Plumbing World? The work is interesting and varied and I love the social aspect of working with a good team, great customers, partner suppliers and industry trainers.  The plumbing industry is by in large a very friendly bunch and once fully immersed in it, it is hard to see anything else, it gets in the blood.
